Just communicating over the internet with friends and family using text and emoticons is soon being replaced by webcams which enables the third person to see the other person as well. A simple Webcam setup includes digital camera attached to a computer, generally connected through a USB port. The “webcam” software is supposed to capture a frame from the digital camera at a preset level and then transfers it to some other location for viewing. Basically webcams are video capture devices which are connected to computer or computer networks, with a USB port for a computer and through Ethernet or Wi-Fi for computer networks. The most well accepted use is for video telephony, allowing a computer to act like a videophone or video conferencing station. Some other uses consist of recording video files or even still images are accessible through number of software programs, devices and applications. Webcams are also known to be popular for being cost effective and flexible.
Similar to most of the things, webcams also range from simple to complex. For those who understand the essence of a simple webcam setup, increasing the complexity is like only adding functionality via software, custom code and equipment connections. Those interested in using a webcam for streaming a video shall want a webcam system having high frame rate. Frame rate shows the number of pictures software grabs and transfers per second. A minimum rate of at least 15 frames per second and 30 fps is considered the best.
